Investing in R&R
When furnishing your bedroom, it is so easy to start making purchases without thinking about the longevity of their use. Surprise: with just a few pieces, bedrooms can get expensive fast. It is extremely important to consider where you want to invest, and where an expensive purchase could be a waste down the road.
For example, most urban apartments fit a queen-sized bed. While an average human spends one third of their life sleeping, a quality mattress is something that can last many years and will always fit in a space. On the contrary, in one rental you might have room for one standard 24” nightstand, while in your next space you might have room for two 32” nightstands or maybe you have so little space you’re forced to make a corner shelf to place a cup of water (I’ve seen this). Save your money on nightstands and spend it elsewhere like a quality mattress or bedding.
Bedframe: Please please please have at least some kind of frame. No one wants their pillows getting scrunched between the mattress and the wall. I once dated a 30-something man who had his mattress on - the floor - not even on a box spring for 1.5 years. I should have known the moment I stepped into that room the relationship wasn’t going to last. You don’t need to spend a fortune, but if you’re looking for something nice but on the lower end of the budget, I recommend purchasing just a headboard. Cheaply made frames can be a nightmare to put together with pieces not lining up, etc. and usually don’t give the look you’re going to want to hang on to.

Lamps: I’m indifferent. If you see something you love, go for it. Odds are you will probably be able to repurpose it in another part of your home. That being said, I would be embarrassed to admit how many table lamps I have bought, returned, resold, or given away while trying to find the ones that feel “just right.”
Rug: Since your bedroom typically doesn’t get as much foot traffic, a bedroom is a great place to show off a beautiful vintage rug or something cozy under the feet with a higher pile. An 8x10 is worth investing in. Bigger or smaller, you may not have a place for it down the road. Tip: If you see a rug you love but it’s not the perfect size, consider layering it over a natural fiber rug to achieve more ground coverage
Accent Chair: Never something on the “need to purchase at once” list. If you’re drawn to something over time pull the trigger, but don’t force the purchase.
