Beginners guide to house plants

White lilies entering our homes and the anticipation of tulip beds remind us life does exist after March, and farmer’s market season is around the corner.

In case weekly fresh flowers aren’t in your budget, here are some of my favorite house plants to keep your home feeling alive and fresh:

Rubber plant

Moody in aesthetic but not in nature, the Rubber Tree’s thick leaves are deep green and burgundy. I’ve had two in my condo for 4+ years and somehow managed to keep them alive. Give it plenty of light to help it retain its color and bushy shape. Best of all, it’s air purifying.

Orchid

This happy little plant can withstand the test of time. After an orchid loses its blooms, you can try your luck at a regrowth or just replace the empty branches with a fresh plant from your local home depot for $20

Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

The Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree is famous for its broad green leaves with prominent veining. These plants are great for filling corners with their grand scale. I’ve had a faux one from Pottery Barn in my living room, as these trees tend to be a little finickey and particular with sunlight.

Snake Plant

The Snake Plant is popular for its incredibly easy-going nature andcomes in many different variations. They’re all pretty industructable and can can tolerate low light and drought. The easiest way to kill this plant is to over-care for it.

Bonus points for air-purifying capabilities!

Olive tree

With their small, silvery, gray-green leaves, olive trees make beautiful houseplants. These Mediterranean plants need a lot of bright, direct sunlight. South and west facing windows are ideal. Dog or cat like eating your plants? Don’t worry, this one is pet friendly.

Mom, if you're reading this, this is not me condoning you for turning our living room into a greenhouse when “everyone has to come inside” for winter…
